STOP THE WARMING: A Media Briefing on Climate Change
and the Kyoto Protocol
February 16, 2005
Summit Lounge, 29th Floor, Holiday Inn Galleria Manila,
#1 ADB Avenue, Ortigas Center, Pasig City, Philippines

klima Climate Change Center together with WWF-Philippines held a media briefing at the Holiday Inn Galleria Manila dubbed "Stop the Warming: A Media Briefing on Climate Change and the Kyoto Protocol". klima Climate Change Center highlighted a study done by the MANILA OBSERVATORY in collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) that mapped out areas in the country which are vulnerable to climate-related disasters brought about by changes in temperature, wind and rainfall patterns.

These maps give a striking representation of regions in the Philippines that are
vulnerable to drought (El Niño) and typhoon prone areas as well as agricultural
crops that will bear the most damage from El Niño like corn and rice.  All these maps will enable the government and affected communities to better formulate disaster reduction and prevention programs.

With coal being one of the main fossil fuel that contributes to climate change,
WWF-Philippines established Coal Trail where using a cartoon mosquito to symbolize the coal industry, this project discusses the multiple impacts of coal on public health, the environment, and the economy as it portrays the industry as a parasite bleeding both the consumer and the country dry. Coal Trail will help activists understand what sustains this parasite-government subsidies, centralized planning, corruption, and unbalanced market pricing of energy, among others-as well as how to kill it.

"Coal Trail will examine the economic, social, environmental, and health costs
associated with coal," says Ina Pozon, Campaign Officer for WWF-Philippines'
Climate and Energy Programme. "By linking coal with issues other than the
environment such as energy security, loss of livelihood, trade and aid programmes, politics, and health impacts, we broaden not only the arguments
against coal, but more importantly, expand the support base of the coal to
clean energy movement."
